Tender Mercy

From Doris: Even though my cancer treatments are on temporary hold while my biopsy wound heals, my white blood cell count remained in normal ranges.

Did you know?

From Paul: Epoxy anchoring adhesive gel and cure times vary according to the ambient temperature at the time of application. Gel time is the window during which you have to set the anchors. Cure time is when the epoxy is fully effective. Between 67 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit the gel time is four minutes minutes.  Once the temperature reaches 86 degrees, the gel time decreases to one minute.  Cure time is 40 minutes between 67 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature is below 50 degrees, the cure time is 40 hours. This table is on the tube of epoxy, but I could not read it without a magnifying glass in order to read it. From Doris: According to our son, Tom, Iowa has a state law that says schools cannot begin their fall schedules before the conclusion of the Iowa State Fair. Paul often rubs my neck or runs his fingers through my hair when I am dealing with a tension headache. We have learned that people notice. This week four different women came up to us while we were w...

Inspirational Quote

From Doris: “Being human, we would expel from our lives physical pain and mental anguish and assure ourselves of continual ease and comfort, but if we were to close the doors upon sorrow and distress, we might be excluding our greatest friends and benefactors. Suffering can make saints of people as they learn patience, long-suffering, and self-mastery.” - President Spencer W Kimball, 1972.

Scripture

From Doris: "And the Lord provided for them that they should hunger not, neither should they thirst; yea, and he also gave them strength, that they should suffer no manner of afflictions, save it were swallowed up in the joy of Christ. Now this was according to the prayer of Alma; and this because he prayed in faith." Alma 31:38

Grief

From Doris: Certain dates bring painful memories.  On May 3rd we were supposed to have flown to Salt Lake City to enter the MTC. Today is August 3rd. We could have completed one sixth of our mission by now. Instead I have not even completed one eighth of my cancer treatments.

Counting my Blessings

From Doris: God does leave me alone to battle cancer.  I am confident in my medical care, but it is not sufficient. I need Heaven’s help to get through each day. My biopsy wound is healing.  The infection is gone. I will not be undergoing an infusion or taking chemo pills this upcoming week.  Paul’s birthday is this week and I should feel well enough to enjoy the celebration. Our vincas are gorgeous.      Tracy brought me my favorite smoothie and visited me this week.  She came on a day when I was discouraged. We rediscovered Bent Corners, a local used bookstore. I appreciate that the books there are displayed according to genres and each section is alphabetized by the author’s last name. I love to read and used bookstores are not as busy as a Barnes and Noble. At church today Ryan Stewart shared a portion of his patriarchal blessing as part of his testimony “your trials in life are necessary, so look upon them as beneficial to...

General Update

Image
From Paul: Cycle 3 (in Waiting) We are waiting on complete healing of Doris’ skin punch biopsy before Cycle 3, which includes another infusion, and the reintroduction of the oral medication and adding a second oral medication will again be part of her treatment. For now, her treatment continues to be on pause until the healing is complete. I am going to attempt to present the medications (without naming them) and the desired effects they will have in treating Doris’ MCL. I am leaving the names of the medications out because I don’t think I know enough to give medical advice. If you are less curious than I am, you may want to gloss over much of what follows. I would suggest you could skip to the heading "Skip to here". Doris began Oral Medication (OM-1) on May 29. It is an antineoplastic agent (cancer medicine). Antineoplastic refers to   substances or treatments that inhibit or prevent the development, growth, or proliferation of neoplasms, which are abnormal grow...
